 Rick Gilbert - Power Carver

Artist, Sculptor, Wood Worker, Bespoke and Unusual

Wood from all around the world has been in my life since early childhood – learning about the densities, grain and other properties of this natural material. After leaving school, I pursued my first career as a chef in the Armed Forces and later, provided specialist catering to boutique hotels and major corporates. During this time, I was fortunate enough to travel the world, meeting and cooking for many famous people – including HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip.

A long illness and death of my wife in 2017 precipitated a major change of career direction to that of power carving – a mindful and creative art.

I work primarily with local tree surgeons, recycling and repurposing wood from trees that are felled through necessity (e.g. disease or as a result of building works). Predominantly my inspiration comes from the diverse nature and peoples I experienced whilst travelling, as well as the art I was exposed to in high-class establishments.

I love flowing shapes and sweeping curves and rarely incorporate a straight line. Each piece I make is unique and dictated by the grain of the particular wood or the form that I have designed.

The extremely fine finish which I achieve is designed for indoors but, this can be modified for pieces required for sheltered outdoor spaces.

Commissions are welcome. Please contact me to discuss and specialist woods such as mango and Rhodesian tamboti can be obtained through local suppliers, if required.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me.
